Katherine Gross
Welcome! I am a journalist with eight years of professional experience, currently based in NYC. This is my website, where you can explore my work, learn more about me, and receive my contact information.
News
The bulk of my hard news experience comes from my time reporting on politics for NYU's journal International Relations Insider. I wrote for Western Europe, before becoming a section editor and later, executive editor, for the publication. Included are a number of stories about the coronavirus pandemic, Alexei Navalny, and France's history with Islamophobia.
Feature
Features are my favorite stories to write, as they allow an extended look into issues. I wrote a feature story in 2020 about how the Navajo nation is disproportionately represented in news coverage about the pandemic, which remains (in my opinion) my best piece to this day. Explore that work, among other pieces about female hockey players, babka bakers, and eyebrows, below.
Opinion/Reviews
I learned to write real opinion pieces while working at SquareMeal, a London-based restaurant and venue guide-- yet because of the anonymous and ever-changing nature of the job, much of the copy I wrote went unattributed. Nevertheless, I have many samples of my work as I wrote "best for..." lists, restaurant descriptions, foodie news, and the best part-- reviews.
Sports
I grew up playing ice hockey and soccer, though I've been an avid watcher of most sports for my entire life. As a diehard Chicago Blackhawks fan, I was thrilled to work for Second City Hockey-- a Vox Media page dedicated to all things Chicago hockey. During my time, I wrote updates on Blackhawks prospects, game previews, opinion pieces, and more.
Academia
I leave my undergraduate university, NYU, in May 2023 after double-majoring in Journalism and Global Liberal Studies: Politics, Rights, and Development. Though my academic work may appear longer and denser than my journalism, I am very proud of the pieces I was able to complete and publish at the Journal of Politics and International Affairs. Explore content related to the French National Soccer Team, climate change, Ukrainian food, and more.
Multimedia
I am grateful that my university insisted that all journalism majors must be familiar with video cameras, DSLR cameras, audio recorders, and the Adobe editing suite. Photography is a hobby of mine, but this professional training has allowed me to expand my options for what stories I take on, and how they are represented. I took some of my favorite images at a Halloween costume store this fall, which supplemented a story I did nicely and allowed me autonomy in determining a 'look' for my piece. Explore some of my audio, video, and photography content below.
Hello!
I first realized I wanted to be a journalist when I was 13 years old, while watching Anthony Bourdain. Though I grew up in the beautiful and exotic state of Illinois (let's go Blackhawks), the concept of broadening my horizons by speaking to a wide variety of people and exploring new corners of the world has always excited me.
Thanks to my work and my undergrad education at NYU, I've been able to live and travel around America, Europe, and Africa. I've worked in breaking news, sports, and food journalism, and I love new opportunities to diversify my journalism experience.
In my freetime, I love playing ice hockey, listening to new music (current fav: Mulatu Astatke), and cooking.
